Brief Description

The Research Scholar Grant (RSG) supports investigator-initiated projects across the cancer research continuum. 

Who's Eligible: Independent investigators in the first 8 years of an independent research career or faculty appointment are eligible to apply. Eligibility is extended for 10 years for clinician scientists who remain active in clinical care. Applicants typically must be within 14 years of receiving a terminal (doctorate) degree and cannot have more than one R01/R01-like grant (>$100,000/year direct costs for more than 3 years) as principal investigator at the time of application.  

Areas of Expanded Eligibility: In the Cancer Control and Prevention Research Program, RSG applicants may be at any stage in their career if they focus their project on either: 1) Health Policy/Health Services research or 2) Cancer Health Equity. 

Grant Term and Budget: Awards are for up to 4 years, for up to $165,000 a year for direct costs, plus 20% allowable indirect costs.

Priority Area on Cancer Health Equity: For the RSG award in the Cancer Control and Prevention Research Program with a focus on health equity, the maximum award is for 4 years at up to $165,000 per year (direct costs), plus 20% allowable indirect costs. Additionally, large multilevel studies that address cancer health equity may propose up to a maximum of 5 years and $200,000 per year (direct costs), plus 20% allowable indirect costs.
